Holiday Tips for Florida Homeowners

This is the time of year where Florida homeowners are hosting holiday gatherings and celebrating the season of giving. To ensure a fun and safe holiday season, here are a few holiday tips Florida homeowners should follow:

Decorate Safely

When getting ready to decorate your home, check all cords and bulbs for damage and replace them accordingly. Avoid placing decorations along walking paths and steps to prevent tripping accidents. When going to sleep or leaving the house, be sure to turn off all decorative lights and candles.

Avoid Kitchen Hazards

A lot of time can be spent in the kitchen prepping and cooking holiday meals and it's important to avoid hazards which may cause an accident. Keep an eye on stovetops and ovens and turn off appliances after each use. Always use protective mitts to carry hot objects and keep children away from the cooking area.

Properly use Grills and Fryers

Fryers and grills should always be used outdoors, on level ground, and at least 30 feet away from buildings and flammable materials. Use proper tools like oven mitts, potholders, and tongs to handle hot pots or pans. Never leave fryers, grills, or stovetops unattended, as NFPA states: "unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths."

Use Home Security Systems

Whether going away on vacation or staying home for the holidays, having a home security system will keep your home protected during a time when theft and burglary are prevalent. Install cameras in and around your home or consider a smart security doorbell. Most security systems will send notifications to your phone when there is motion detected at your doorstep. Some security systems also allow you to video conference with someone at your door, which is a great deterrent for thieves trying to steal packages.
