Fire Safety Tips for Fire Prevention Week

Recognized each October, National Fire Prevention Week serves to educate us about the importance of fire safety. Fires can occur anywhere and at any time. In fact, the NFPA reports U.S. fire departments respond to a home fire every 86 seconds.  In recognition of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, October 7-13, Edison Insurance Company would like to provide some tips for reducing the likelihood of a fire in your home, and how to escape safely in the event of a fire.

Fire Prevention

  • Cooking is one of the most common causes of home fires. Never leave a hot stove unattended and keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
  • Be sure to have a smoke alarm inside bedrooms and outside of each room of your home. Don’t forget to test them frequently.
  • Check your outlets and extension cords to make sure they are not overloaded.
  • Do not smoke inside your home. Or better yet, quit smoking altogether.
  • Keep flammable items in open areas and away from heat sources.

Escape Planning

  • Create a home fire escape plan.
  • Each member of the family should know two ways out of every room.
  • Don’t forget to plan an outside meeting place.
  • Practice your home fire drill with your family at least two times a year.

Scare Safely on Halloween

Halloween is one of the most exciting days of the year for kids and many adults. However, millions of parents worry about their children’s safety on Halloween for a variety of reasons. Halloween may be known to be the spookiest and scariest day of the year, and sometimes it can be for the wrong reasons. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, twice as many child pedestrians are killed while walking on Halloween compared to any other day of the year. Here are several steps you can take to keep your family safe this Halloween:

Walking

  • Look before you cross the street
  • Younger trick-or-treaters should always be supervised
  • Use sidewalks and paths
  • Stay in well-lit areas

Costumes

  • Use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags to be visible to drivers
  • Do not let your child wear a mask, as it can get in the way of their vision
  • Make sure the costume fits properly to avoid tripping hazards

Driving

  • Drive cautiously and slowly
  • Eliminate any distractions like cell phones
  • Slow down and be alert in residential neighborhoods
  • Never drink and drive.

These tips will make sure your children have a safe Halloween.  We hope you and your family have a fun and safe Halloween. For more tips on Halloween safety, visit Safe Kids Worldwide.
