3 Things You May Not Have Known About Hurricanes

As Floridians, we are all aware of the damage and destruction hurricanes can cause. While hurricanes may be scary, they are also surprisingly interesting.  Hurricanes, also known as tropical cyclones, are storms characterized by strong winds, heavy rains, and destruction.  Here are 3 things you may not have known about hurricanes:

  1. Tropical cyclones can go by many names, depending on the ocean they form in. A hurricane is only a "hurricane" when it is formed over the Atlantic Ocean. If a storm is formed over the Pacific Ocean, it is called a typhoon. If one is formed over the South Pacific or the Indian Ocean, it is called a cyclone.
  2. Tropical Cyclones started being named in 1953, by the National Hurricane Center to make it easier for the public to know which storm warnings to follow. There are six annual lists with 21 names each. After a list has been used, it repeats every seventh year - unless a specific name is retired and replaced with a new one. In the event all 21 names are used in one Hurricane Season, all additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet.
  3. When a hurricane becomes noteworthy for causing much destruction or devastation, the name of the storm is retired. Due to the devastating, destructive and costly nature of last year's hurricane season, four storms had their names retired; those being: Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Tropical Storm Nate.

Although these facts may be fun, hurricanes are serious storms and should not be taken lightly. Make sure you take proper precautions to keep you, your family, and home safe. Should the catastrophe strike, you can be sure Edison Insurance Company will be ready to assist you.
