Spring Break-In Prevention Tips

March is the peak month for spring break vacations. Whether you are gone for a night, or an entire week, your empty home is a gold mine for potential thieves. Taking a few extra steps to keep your home safe can make all the difference. Don't take chances on a potential break-in this spring break by following these simple prevention tips.

Lock your doors and set your alarm: Sometimes the stress of getting the family packed and ready to leave on time can cause you to forget the basics before you go. Take a few minutes to check outside doors and windows to make sure they are locked, and then set your alarm.

Bring in your spare key: Many homes have a hidden key located somewhere on their property and some criminals are smart enough to go looking for your hidden key while you are away. Be sure to place hidden keys in a safe place before you leave.

Simulate occupancy: Keep some lights on in normally populated areas of your home using a timer. Keeping your lights off night-after-night while you are will alert a potential thief will know you aren't home.

Have a trusty neighbor or friend: Ask your neighbor or a friend you trust to check in on your house and collect your mail while you are out of town.

Wait to share: One of the easiest ways criminals know you are out of town is when you post your vacation photos, or "check-in" at the awesome places you are visiting on social media. It is highly recommended to wait until you are back at home to share all your vacation fun with your friends and family on social media.

We hope you can pack your peace-of-mind with a few of these helpful tips before you embark on your well-deserved spring break vacation. We hope you enjoy your time away, and in case the unfortunate occurs, you can be sure Edison Insurance Company will be ready to assist you.
