Fire Prevention Tips for Homeowners

Nobody expects a fire to occur in their home or property, however, accidents do occur. If you are not careful, a small fire can become devastating within a matter of seconds. Some of the most common types of fires include heating fires, cooking/kitchen fires, candles or open flame fires, and wildfires. As a homeowner, it is important you know your risk of a fire occurring, how to prevent a fire, and what to do in the event of a fire. By following some of the fire safety information below, you can help keep your family and home prepared and protected.

Fire Prevention Week

Recognized each October, The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sponsors Fire Prevention Week. This year's Fire Prevention Week runs from October 9th through 15th and serves to educate us about the importance of fire safety. According to the NFPA, cooking fires are the number one cause for home fires and burn injuries. As such, we would like to provide these cooking safety tips:

  • Never leave a working kitchen unattended.
  • Have a lid for each pot and pan which can be used to cover a grease fire.
  • Keep your kitchen free of clutter, especially near heat sources.
  • Always remember to turn off your stove and oven after each use.
  • Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

Fire Prevention Tips:

To keep your family and home safe, there are many steps you can take to reduce your risk of a fire occurring in your home. Here are a few tips:

  • Keep flammable items away from heat sources and open flames.
  • Be sure to extinguish candles when not in use.
  • Use flameless candles or battery-operated lamps and flashlights should the power go out.
  • Do not smoke inside your home, or better yet, quit smoking.
  • Keep lighters and matches in a safe location and out of the reach of children.

What to do should a fire occur:

You and your family should have a fire escape and evacuation plan in place and practice it frequently. Should a fire occur in your home, everyone out safely should be the number one priority. Once safely outside, you should do the following:

  • Call 911 as soon as possible.
  • Once it is safe to do so, contact our claims department to file your fire claim.
  • It is important to know, should a fire damage your home and belongings, your homeowners insurance coverage will assist you in the repairs and rebuilding process.
