New Year's is a time to celebrate the incoming year with family and friends, food and drink, and fireworks. Since many attend parties for New Year's, there is a spike in drinking and driving accidents. Fireworks are also very popular to start your new year off with a bang, however, should they be used improperly, it can result in some serious injuries. Drinking and Driving
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), New Year's Day was ranked as the day with the highest percentage of deaths related to alcohol. Never drink and drive. Have a designated driver or use a ride-sharing service to make sure you get home safely. Be sure to pace yourself when drinking and keep alcohol out of reach of children and pets.
Fireworks
New Year's Eve is a popular day for firework shows. Be sure to have a responsible adult in charge of all firework activities. Be sure to keep spectators a safe distance away, and always light fireworks off into an open area away from flammable materials. Light fireworks one at a time and douse used fireworks in water before discarding.
Hosting
Hosting a New Year's party does come with responsibilities. You are accountable for the safety of your guests. Be sure to remove and clean up any tripping or slipping hazards throughout your home. Stop serving alcohol hours before the end of your party. Offer lots of foods and snacks for your guests. Before your guests leave, make sure they are safe to drive. If not, offer to order a ride-sharing service or cab or offer a place to sleep.
