Pet-Proofing Your Home

Pets are curious creatures, and if we fail to take protective measures around our home they could potentially get hurt in ways we wouldn’t expect. Below are a few ways to pet-proof your home and avoid an accident harming your furry friend.

Install Gates

If there are certain areas of your home you’d like to keep off limits to your pets, such as upstairs areas, laundry rooms, or the bedroom, consider installing or placing a gate. For pets around 6 months or younger, it is suggested they be confined to a smaller area such as a hallway, small bedroom, or the kitchen to help them get acclimated and house trained.

Move Harmful Chemicals

Ensure all potentially harmful chemicals, like cleaning supplies, are stored up high and in cabinets. Make sure all gardening supplies are properly stored before letting pets roam around the backyard. Pets can be very curious and with a little determination their sharp teeth can get through just about anything. Keep all sharp objects and tools out of reach as well, to avoid injury.

Cover the Trash

Keep the trash cans around your home securely covered so pets cannot get into the garbage. Pets can rifle through your trash if they’re bored or seeking attention and can end up putting something potentially dangerous in their mouth. If your trash bin does not have a lid and your pet is roaming the house, be sure to take out the garbage or move it before you leave home.

Research Your House Plants

There are several types of house plants which can pose a serious threat to animals and result in poisoning. Be aware of the types of plants you keep in your home, and research before purchasing them to see if they could harm your pets. Make sure all plants are placed out of reach to avoid accidents. Monitor cats or kittens who can reach high places where plants are placed and consider keeping these plants safer outside.

Consider Animal Liability Coverage

Most standard homeowners policies do not include animal liability coverage. However, Edison Insurance Company offers animal liability coverage at a minimal cost to protect our policyholders from expenses correlated with a dog attack or dog bite. This additional coverage provides a $25,000 liability sub-limit and medical payments of $2,000. Keeping your family and home safe and protected is Edison Insurance Company’s number one priority. Ask your agent about adding this coverage to your existing policy. If you would like to become an Edison policyholder click here to get a quote or call us at 866-568-8922 Option 1.
