Thanksgiving and the holidays are times we enjoy sharing the kitchen with our family and friends. Whether you are preparing your first Thanksgiving meal, or are an experienced chef, it is important you are aware of the safest ways to prepare and cook your turkey and fixings.
When preparing your Thanksgiving meal, be aware of the four main safety issues as advised by the CDC.
Safe Thawing: Thaw your turkey at a safe temperature. Temperatures between 40 and 140°F are the ranges where bacteria can rapidly multiply. Thaw food safely in the refrigerator, the microwave, or in cold water.
Safe Preparation: After working with raw poultry, always wash your hands, work surfaces, and utensils before touching other foods.
Safe Stuffing: To ensure stuffing is cooked safely and correctly, cook stuffing outside the turkey in casserole dish. If you wish to place stuffing inside the turkey, use a food thermometer to be sure the center of the stuffing reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F.
Safe Cooking: According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Thanksgiving is one of the leading dates for home cooking fires. Never leave the kitchen unattended and check on your turkey frequently. Before taking your turkey out of the oven, ensure it has been cooked to a safe temperature of 165°F, by using a food thermometer.
