5 Fire Safety Tips for National Fire Prevention Week

Recognized each October, National Fire Prevention Week, October 6 through 11, serves to educate us about the importance of fire safety. Fires can occur anywhere and at any time. In fact, the NFPA reports U.S. fire departments respond to a home fire every 86 seconds.  The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week isNot Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape”. As such, Edison Insurance Company would like to provide the following escape planning tips:

1. Create a home fire escape plan.

2. Each family member should know two ways out of every room.

3. Have a safe place to meet should your family become separated.

4. Practice home fire drills with your family at least two times a year.

 5. Make sure all the smoke alarms in your home are in proper working order and test them often.

We hope you take these tips into consideration to keep you, your family, and home fire safe. For more fire escape planning tips and information on Fire Prevention Week, click here.

Animal Liability Coverage from Edison Insurance Company

Although our four-legged friends are like members of our family, we sometimes forget they can become dangerous when agitated or scared. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year. With the holidays approaching and family and friends entering our homes, now is the time to make sure you can prevent dog bites and make sure you are covered should an incident occur.

Tips for Preventing Dog Bites:

  • Do not disturb a dog while it is eating, sleeping, or chewing on a toy.
  • If you notice a dog is indicating it is uncomfortable and feeling the need to bite, put a safe distance between you and the dog.
  • Children are the most common victims of dog bites. Do not leave infants or young children unaccompanied with a dog.
  • Practice caution when exposing your dog to new situations.
  • If your dog develops aggressive and frightening behaviors, seek advice from your veterinarian.

Animal Liability Coverage:

According to the Insurance Information Institute (iii), homeowners insurance companies throughout the country paid approximately $675 million in animal liability claims due to dog bites or other dog-related injuries in 2018.  Most standard homeowners policies do not include animal liability coverage. However, Edison Insurance Company offers animal liability coverage at a minimal cost to protect our policyholders from expenses correlated with a dog attack or dog bite. This additional coverage provides a $25,000 liability sub-limit and medical payments of $2,000.  Please note, certain restrictions may apply and will be noted in your insurance policy.  Should you be interested in adding animal liability to your policy, contact your agent.

As a Florida homeowner, it is important to protect your property should the unexpected occur. Homeowners insurance coverage to fit the needs of your family is available through Edison Insurance Company. Should you have any questions or concerns about your policy, contact your agent, or call us at 866-568-8922.

Tips for a Spooktacular and Safe Halloween

As one of the most anticipated holidays throughout the year, Halloween can turn scary when safety precautions are overlooked. Making safety a top priority will make for a Spooktacular time. We encourage you to keep these tips in mind to ensure a safe Halloween:

Walking

  • Parents and/or responsible adults should always supervise their children while trick-or-treating.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street as drivers may have a difficult time seeing you.
  • Put electronics away to avoid distractions.
  • Always walk on sidewalks or paths.

Costumes

  • Adhere reflective tape or stickers on bags and costumes to be seen by drivers.
  • Do not let your child wear a mask while walking, as some masks may obstruct their vision.
  • When picking a costume, be sure it is the right size and length to avoid trips and falls.
  • Choose fire-retardant costumes and accessories.

Driving

  • Be extra alert during peak trick-or-treating times between 5:30 and 9:30 pm.
  • Drive slowly through neighborhoods and be alert for trick-or-treaters crossing the roads.
  • Never drink and drive.

Candy

  • Provide your children with a healthy meal prior to trick-or-treating to avoid them filling up on Halloween candy and treats.
  • Always check Halloween treats before consumption. Although tampering with candy is rare, all treats should be closely examined just in case.
  • Ration treats and candy for the following days and weeks after Halloween.

Decorations

  • Remove potential tripping hazards and decorations away from trick-or-treaters.
  • Light jack-o-lanterns with battery operated candles.
  • Should you have decorations requiring power, make sure you do not overload extension cords. Check on the cords often to see if they are overheating.
