Thanksgiving is the number-one day for home fires. According to a report recently published by the U.S. Fire Administration, the number of residential fires on Thanksgiving Day is more than double the average number of fires on all other days. Although wildly popular, the improper use of turkey fryers can lead to devastating burns, and the destruction of property. If you are among the millions of Americans who enjoy a deep fried turkey on Thanksgiving, ensure your holiday is a joyous one by following these safety tips while deep frying your turkey:
· Fryers should always be used outdoors, on level ground, and at least 30 feet away from buildings and flammable materials.
· Do not overfill fryer with oil; this will cause the oil to spill when the turkey is put in.
· Make sure the turkey is completely thawed before it is placed in a fryer. A partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter when put in the pot.
· Take your time lowering the bird in the oil — about 2 inches at a time, with short pauses in between — and cook it for 3½ minutes per pound.
· Never leave the fryer unattended.
· Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts. Wear long sleeves and safety goggles to protect from splatter.
· Never let children or pets near the fryer when in use or after use, as the oil can remain hot for hours.
· Keep all-purpose fire extinguishers nearby.
· If a turkey fryer fire occurs, call 911 immediately.
