Blast into the New Year: Fireworks Safety Tips

If you live in a state where fireworks are legal for use, it is important to follow the proper safety precautions for your well-being, and for the safety of everyone around you. In preparation for holiday celebrations, here are 10 things to remember.

  • Always place fireworks on a hard, level surface.

  • Shoot fireworks off in a wide, open area, away from flammable materials.

  • Designate a responsible adult to set off fireworks.

  • Keep everyone at a minimum of 200 feet away from the fireworks once you are ready to set them off.

  • Refrain from placing any part of your body directly over fireworks when lighting the fuse.

  • Do not point or throw fireworks at another person.

  • Adults should supervise young children around fireworks.

  • Avoid re-lighting or picking up fireworks which have failed to ignite.

  • Light fireworks one at a time and move away quickly.

  • Douse used fireworks with water before discarding.

If you are unsure about how to use your fireworks before setting them off, take a moment to do some research and read the instructions carefully to prevent an accident. Another option is to attend a public fireworks display and leave it in the hands of professionals. We hope you will take our suggestions into consideration before lighting your first, or next, set of fireworks. Enjoy and be safe.

Menorah Safety Tips for Hanukkah

Hanukkah, known as the Festival of Lights, has become one of the most popular Jewish holidays of the year, commemorating the rededication of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and on each day, a single candle is lit while blessings over the candle are chanted and special songs are sung. Games are played, meals are shared and small gifts are given. As this holiday approaches, we hope you will consider these safety tips before lighting your first candle:

  • Never leave a lit menorah unattended.

  • Be careful not to light a candle near curtains or decorations. If there are surrounding decorations, be sure to place them at a good distance.

  • When plugging in an electric menorah, keep small children away from the socket.

  • Make sure all smoke detectors in the house are working properly, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby.

  • Place the menorah on a nonflammable surface like aluminum foil to catch dripping candle wax. This also makes cleaning up easier.

  • Place pets in a secure area away from wires and food, which could make them sick.

Have a safe and Happy Hanukkah… Shalom!

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips

Each year, decorations get bigger and bigger while we are unknowingly in competition with our neighbors. The lights get brighter and the trees get taller. One thing we should all keep an eye out for are safety hazards. With all of the lights, statues and wrapping paper, safety isn’t always a main concern. According to the American Red Cross, nearly 47,000 fires occur during the winter holidays claiming more than 500 lives and causing more than 2,200 injuries. 40 of those home fires per day are caused by children playing and one of every 22 home fires started by Christmas trees result in death.

  • Place Christmas trees, candles and decorations at least three feet away from fireplaces, heaters and radiators.

  • Always unplug tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. It may look pretty to those driving by, but without anyone there to extinguish a potential fire, you could lose your home.

  • Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees to prevent them from tipping over and potentially injuring someone or starting a fire.

  • Do a complete inspection of your home every night to ensure all candles are blown out before going to bed.

  • Install a smoke alarm on each level of your home. The downstairs kitchen alarm will not go off if there is a fire in the upstairs bedroom until it is too late. “Having a working smoke alarm reduces one’s chances of dying in a fire by nearly half” (ARC).

We urge you to take these steps into consideration this year to reduce the risk of accidents in your home in the future. Have a safe and happy holiday season.
